Senator Mike Braun met with LightStream staff and area leaders in a recent visit to Buffalo on August 7, 2024. The Republican senator from Jasper was on hand to discuss broadband opportunities, their challenges, and the Smart Rural Community program. In addition to company personnel, in attendance was White County Commissioner Mike Smolek, White County Economic Development President Randy Strasser, and Indiana Rural Broadband Association President Alan Terrell.
Commissioner Smolek provided perspective on county projects and the need for connectivity. Alan Terrell advocated for all rural broadband providers across Indiana and discussed the $868 million in BEAD funds that will be distributed throughout Indiana. Randy Strasser highlighted the importance of county partnerships to further expand infrastructure and future opportunities.
In addition, Braun asked about federal, state, and local programs that help and hinder broadband expansion. “The adoption of the Indiana Broadband Ready program in White County has helped tremendously,” says Brent Gillum, LightStream President and CEO. “Eliminating permit fees and approving the permits on a faster timeline allows us to provide a better experience to the people we serve.”
Lastly, the visit was to emphasize the Smart Rural Community designation and why it is important for the area to connect education, government, agriculture, health care, and more. “It is imperative for rural broadband to continue to grow,” said Senator Braun. “Congratulations on the recent acquisition and all your efforts towards improving our communities.”
LightStream is a proponent of deploying fiber optic technology as much as possible for broadband buildouts across Indiana and the United States.
